This course will provide you with an understanding of what recovery capital is and how to measure it using the REC-CAP system. The course combines theory and practice providing applied skills such as completing an assessment and interpreting the results, adding, and modifying goals, and tagging local resources clients may be able to use to accomplish these goals. This provides the basis for the Measure, Plan, Engage (MPE) approach in which the client will learn how to use the results from the REC-CAP measure to create a Recovery Care Plan and support the goals outlined in the plan through effective engagement with resources accessed in the local community.
Who should take this course?
There are no educational requirements beyond a strong command of written and spoken English. The course is primarily designed for recovery navigators (whether professionals or peers or both) who will support the person in recovery through their recovery journey. However, it is also likely to be extremely valuable to service managers in agencies who are using the REC-CAP system.

Be able to explain what recovery capital is and what both positive and negative capital are
Demonstrate the ability to register clients on the ARMS platform and to complete the REC-CAP measurement tool with them
Understand how to interpret and provide feedback on the REC-CAP results score profile and to discuss what that means for the person in recovery
Be able to translate REC-CAP results into a Recovery Care Plan and work with the person in recovery to set goals
How to complete progress review sessions of Recovery Care Plan and set appropriate tasks and actions and support clients with completing node-link maps
Understand the principles of Community Engagement and demonstrate that these resources can be accessed to support the recovery journeys of people in recovery

Modules:
The Science of Recovery and Recovery Capital: This module will provide a summary of the scientific evidence base around recovery capital- where the term comes from, what it means and how it is mapped and measured
Navigating the REC-CAP and ARMS: This section will provide you with the basic skills necessary to navigate the ARMS system including enrolling a new client.
Baseline measurement, interpretation, and feedback: Here the student will apply the skills learned in the first two modules to develop the competences to support clients in completing the online assessment and working through the results to create a strengths-based assessment of recovery capital.
Recovery care planning and community engagement: This section will start with the basic principles of care planning and will explain the model of SMART objectives and how to support clients to translate their REC-CAP score profile into a Recovery Care Plan on the ARMS system. This will also include progressing towards care planning goals through effective engagement with community resources and assets.
Making sense of change - interpreting the change scores in the REC-CAP: The aim of the REC-CAP is to build recovery capital and so it is necessary to interpret scores not only of individual completions but also of changes in score profiles over time and this module explains the principles and practice of change management
Recovery Plan reviewing and learning lessons: Building on the key learnings of Module 4 on care planning, this module looks at both reviewing care plans, and how to use key maps that build learning for recovery both on successes and on unmet goals in the Recovery Care Plan.
